Natural Indigo Dye: Shibori Collection Opening Day at Design Orchard 2025

We are excited to share the launch of our Natural Indigo Dye: Shibori Collection at Design Orchard — a milestone in our ongoing journey toward sustainable design and mindful craftsmanship.

For this collection, COCOONESE partnered with Singapore-based Blue Bee Tie Dye, a brand dedicated to preserving traditional indigo dyeing while promoting eco-conscious practices. Together, we aim to create pieces that honor nature, culture, and community.

Crafted by Hand, Dyed by Nature

Each fabric in this collection is hand-dyed by Bai artisans from Dali, Yunnan, using traditional Shibori (绞缬) techniques passed down through generations. This ancient resist-dyeing process involves careful folding, stitching, and bundling, followed by repeated dyeing in natural indigo made from fermented Strobilanthes cusia (马蓝) leaves.

Unlike synthetic dyes, natural indigo is biodegradable and non-toxic. The dyeing process itself is slow and respectful — relying on time, patience, and nature’s rhythm rather than chemicals or machines. Every piece carries the unique mark of the artisan’s hand, the breath of the land, and the story of sustainable creation.

Sustainability as a Way of Making

Our Shibori Collection is not only about beauty — it’s about responsibility. From the natural plant dyes to the minimal-waste production methods, each step reflects our belief that design can exist in harmony with the environment.
By collaborating with Blue Bee Tie Dye, we also support small-scale artisans and help preserve traditional skills that are at risk of fading in today’s fast-paced world.
